India government wanted Whatsapp’s End to End encryption to be removed and goverment given access to trace inintial source of specific message.

Whatsapp, owned by Meta has issued statement that it would cease operations in India if compelled to compromise End to End encryption.

The government’s counsel, Kirtiman Singh pointed out that it is a necessity to identify orgin of mis-information or hate speech in order to avoid spread of harmful content.

Whatsapp legal team mentioned that no other country imposes such requirements and to implement traceability demand, it will not be an easy task as quantity of messages exchanged is huge.
